Prioritizing the Creation of Additional States in the South-East Over Inclusion in the NDDC: A Call for Fundamental Reform

Prioritizing the Creation of Additional States in the South-East Over Inclusion in the NDDC: A Call for Fundamental Reform

The recent discourse surrounding the inclusion of Anambra State in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has brought to light crucial questions regarding regional development and equitable representation in Nigeria. While the inclusion of Anambra in the NDDC is not without merit, it is imperative to refocus our attention on the more fundamental issue of state creation in the South-East region.

Senator Dr. Tony Okechukwu Nwoye’s advocacy for Anambra’s inclusion in the NDDC, while noteworthy, may have somewhat diverted attention from the overarching need for additional states in the South-East. The creation of more states in the region is not merely a political maneuver; rather, it is a critical step towards addressing historical imbalances and fostering inclusive development.

It is regrettable that the discourse has veered towards secondary issues when the primary concern should be the rectification of the long-standing anomaly of underrepresentation in the South-East. While the inclusion of Anambra in the NDDC is of importance, it should not overshadow the pressing need to rectify the historical injustice of the region’s underrepresentation in the Nigerian political landscape.

Moreover, the argument gains further traction when we consider the allocation of oil derivation funds. Anambra State, along with other states in the South-East, has been receiving its due share of the 13% oil derivation since 2021. This underscores the fact that the quest for equitable representation transcends mere financial allocations; it is about political empowerment and recognition of the South-East’s legitimate aspirations.

Therefore, we urge Senator Dr. Tony Okechukwu Nwoye and other stakeholders to refocus their efforts on the more significant goal of sponsoring a bill for the creation of additional states in the South-East. By championing this cause, Senator Nwoye has the opportunity to elevate the discourse and spearhead meaningful change that resonates with the aspirations of the South-Eastern people.

In conclusion, while the inclusion of Anambra in the NDDC is a commendable endeavor, it should not overshadow the imperative for broader political reform and representation in the South-East. The creation of additional states is not merely a matter of administrative convenience; it is a fundamental step towards addressing historical injustices and fostering inclusive development in the region.
